According to Csíkszentmihályi, flow is completely focused motivation. It is a single-minded immersion and represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the emotions in the service of performing and learning. In flow the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand.
This is a critical departure from the advice of most gurus who tell you to ignore your resistant feelings and just get started. They tell you that you don’t have to feel good in order to create.
They’re right, you don’t have to, but feeling good sure beats sucking it up and pushing through. I’m not telling you to ignore your feelings.
I am recommending that you deliberately tap into authentic, inspirational feelings and use those to create and complete.
I’m amazed that so many well-meaning experts tell you to ignore resistant feelings and push through. Don’t they know that what we resist persists and that pushing feelings aside actually increases resistance?
